This Week's Simple Tip

Yes, there are some houseplants that are quite finicky, but for the most part, most are happy with the right mix of food, water and shelter from extreme elements. Humans however, are a bit more complicated.

Years of research in psychology, neuroscience, and sociology, show that in order to thrive, humans have 6 basic needs that need to be met pretty much daily:

  1. Food - calories and nutrients including protein, fat, and carbohydrates needed everyday to grow, function, and repair

  2. Water - ample hydration for the body to operate and process food or remove wastes

  3. Shelter - protection from blazing sun, freezing temperatures, wind, and rain to safeguard our human skin and organs

  4. Sleep - 6–9 hours of sleep every 24 hours to enable brain to learn new things or get past emotional pain

  5. Other People - connection (physical or emotional) with other humans; human touch is so important that brains don’t develop correctly without it

  6. Novelty - the opportunity to learn and the potential to fail, without which motivation wanes and a healthy sense of well-being is lost

While we hear a lot about the first four, connection with other people and the need for novelty are just as important, but not necessarily on everyone's agenda.

This Week's Focus

This week, be mindful of the "six mix." Which ones do you do well with, and which ones could you do a little better on? I know for myself that water and sleep are the two areas I need to work on! You can read more about these six needs and how they tie to Maslow's hierarchy of human needs here.
