Is Your Cup Empty?

This Week's Simple Tip

The holiday season can be draining. It's easy to feel overwhelmed with commitments, responsibilities and expectations. At busier times of the year, sometimes we lose sight of what matters most and what brings us the most meaning in life. According to Archbishop Desmond Tutu, "Our greatest joy is when we seek to do good for others. It's how we are made. We are wired to be compassionate." But to truly be joyful, you need to show yourself compassion as well. This may explain why for some, the holiday season can draining as we tend to focus and prioritize others (family, friends, loved ones) above our own needs.

It is critical to stop and recharge your own batteries by focusing on what makes you happy! This is by no means selfish. Having compassion for one's self is necessary for you to be able to do for others!

So how does one recharge with self-care? It varies with the person but some ways include: Spending some time alone, escaping in a book, spending time outside, calling your friends and family more often, dancing and/or singing, laughing at yourself, going for a walk, or looking up at the sky. Doing what makes you happy!

The ability to love and respect oneself will determine the authenticity and ease with which we offer loving kindness to others.

This Week's Focus:

This week, spend some time thinking about things you do that really make you happy. I love to listen to music while sitting by a crackling fire :) Energize yourself by doing some of those things so you can offer true loving kindness to others.
