Why Do You Hesitate?
Have you ever thought twice about doing something, thinking, "I’m already busy with other things, and how much of a difference can I really make?”
Opportunities to help create positive change pop up all the time in our everyday lives. Experts say that one of the most common reasons we procrastinate is because we feel overwhelmed by the size of the challenge before us.
That actually makes sense, and this beautiful little story adapted from The Star Thrower, by Loren Eiseley explains why ...
One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?” The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.” “Son,” the man said, “don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make a difference!” After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said…..“I made a difference for that one.”

Next time you catch yourself questioning the difference you can make, remember the starfish story, and break the big challenge down into smaller pieces. Individually we may not be able to change the entire world, but we can at least change a small part of it, for someone or something!
